Focus On: Angel Oloshove

Angel Oloshove natural del estado de Texas en Estados Unidos es una joven ceramista y diseñadora que ha llamado nuestra atención a través de su trabajo.Me encontraba pasando el dedo rápidamente sobre la pantalla del móvil sin prestar atención hasta que llegué a uno de sus jarrones. Supongo que haber nacido en Sevilla te hace crecer con una especial obsesión hacia la alfarería, los azulejos y casi todo lo que antes fue tierra.
La alfarería fue un arte dominado casi exclusivamente por las mujeres , se creía que la figura de la alfarera tenía el control sobre el fuego, eran consideradas místicas creadoras capaces de dar forma a sus deidades. Sus creaciones son vistas como úteros que gestan, nutren y protegen.
En el trabajo de Oloshove aprecio ese punto místico y fantástico. El imaginario de la creadora y diseñadora tejana rompe con el tópico y el prejuicio de que la alfarería es un arte menor. Angel no solo modela, da color y cuece, es capaz de crear un universo rico en formas y colores a través de la cerámica y los materiales que maneja.

Su cerámica es madre contenedora de piezas de colores pastel donde sobresalen las formas suaves y femeninas.
Si bien el trabajo de Oloshove reproduce fórmulas antiguas tanto en los materiales usados como en los procedimientos, la evolución viene a través de la influencias que se perciben en la obra de la artista: cultura pop, simbolismo y sobre todo cultura y lenguaje generador en las redes, donde destaca el uso de emojis, gatitos y mucha pizza.
Su trabajo concilia un arte milenario con la cultura 2.0 a la que sin duda pertenece y donde se genera su lenguaje artístico.

La cerámica de Angel va más allá de lo primitivo, de lo funcional y lo decorativo, crea vida a través de esos seres invertebrados llenos de color, curvas y brillo.

[1] Angel Oloshove is a young ceramist and designer from Texas (1981, USA). I was checking the net when one of her vases calls my eye. We asked Angel which elements influenced her work and she send us gif of fire, angels and flowers, bright colors, nouvelle vague and Yo La Tengo and Fletwood Mac’s songs. I guess that being born in Seville made me grow up with a special obsession for pottery, painted tiles, and for everything that was the ground in the begin. In the past the pottery was an art dominated almost exclusively by women. The ancient people believed that these potter women had control over the fire and they were considered mystical creators capable of shaping their deities. Angel’s whole work is seen as a womb that gestates, nourishes and protects. When I look her creations I perceive that mystical and fantastic point of Mother Nature, wild and strong. Her imaginary as an artist and as Woman breaks with the topic and the prejudice that pottery is a minor art. Angel’s work is not based only in to model clay, also in color it and to bake it, she creates a universe through ceramics and the handling materials rich in shapes and colors. I feel her ceramic and pieces appear as a protective mother, all these pieces show soft and feminine forms. We can say that their creations are presented to us as totems of the past. Even though Oloshove reproduced in her workflow and materials used, ancient formulas, the real change comes through the influences that are perceived in her “little babies”: pop culture, symbolism and especially the culture and language created in networks, which she emphasizes with the use of emojis of kittens and a lot of pizza. Her work creates dialogue between ancient technics and materials and internet culture, (because undoubtedly she belongs here) and where her artistic language is generated. Angel pottery goes beyond the primitive, the functional and decorative, creating life through these colorful invertebrates pieces and her curves and brightness creatures. Facebook. Tumblr. Instagram.
